I remember when this first came out. I was lucky to catch it on the big screen. What a joy. It is interesting to note that I have seen this movie maybe ten or more times and it still delivers on acting, scenery and score with excellent directing. The premise is a good and fresh one. A rogue monster sized shark that likes to eat and kill and then repeat makes itself at home in the waters off Amity where it just snacks until they get wise and take a second look. We then are introduced to politics not solutions and before you know it, we are immersed it what appears to be a perfectly plausible premise with everyday people simple like-minded people caught every which way. That's what keep us entertained. I just finished watching it again just now and I noticed that even though I knew the ending, I waited to see every bit of it. The fine acting does that. At the time this came out, no one wanted to go swimming in 3 feet of water 10 feet from the shore as the movie shares. Why? That's where most of the attacks take place. Chilling sub-story comes up about the USS Indianapolis which was the ship that delivered the nuclear bomb to its secret destination and on the way back was torpedoed. The men who survived turned into fast shark food. Unfortuanely this was a true story. Only 300 survived out of 1100. This adds realism to the main plot quite nicely as told by Robert Shaw expertly I might add. What a pleasant way to spend 2 hours. Good movie to eat your favorite snack and have a tasty drink too. This one lives on for the next generation and the next too. Enjoy.

Few movies feel absolutely perfect from beginning to end quite like Steven Spielberg's first blockbuster. Taking the source novel by Peter Benchley and trimming the fat (like Ellen's affair with Hooper and the ineffectual mafia angle) Spielberg manages to deliver a sensational, terrifying gut-punch of a movie that surpasses its literary origin. With a wonderful cast that shares remarkable chemistry (in particular Roy Scheider and Lorraine Gary, who are palpably believable as a married couple) and a strong, crowd-pleasing screenplay, there's not a single scene, development or interaction that feels insincere or unnecessary. Spielberg manages to work around the technical limitations he faced while shooting the movie, which famously led to the shark POV attack scenes that are furiously fueled by the oppressive score by John Williams, and remain downright horrifying even more than 40 years later.
